PVCu versus Aluminium for Bi Fold Doors

There are alternative materials that can be used in the manufacture of Bifold Doors but in our opinion the optimum material is Aluminium.

We list our reasons below why we think PVCu is a distant second for your consideration.

1. Bifold Doors require very accurate sizes to be manufactured. When joining PVCu section by fusion welding there is always a greater degree of finished size tolerance compared with Aluminium.
2. PVCu is known to expand and contract to a much greater degree than Aluminium. Ironically its probably during the hotter summer months when this expansion occurs which is the peak time for opening up your new Bi Fold Doors!
3. The maximum permitted size of a PVCu door is in the region of 4000mm wide x 2250mm high in white profile and when you want a colour or woodgrain then you are looking at 2.5 metres wide by 2.1metres high. Compare this to an our Aluminium Bifold Door where you can have a width of 20 metres and a height of 2.5metres regardless of colour. Can you see the difference?
4. Bifold Doors evolved from a mainly commercial market where they were mainly produced using Aluminium sections. They have stood the test of time. PVCu is a relative newcomer.
5. Bifold Doors can be asked to carry up to 80kg of glass per leaf. Securing the hardware to the profile in Aluminium is done using machine screws which are precision screws that can be screwed in and out many times. Generally PVCu profile is attached to the hardware using self tapping screws.
6. Some PVCu systems rely on manually sawing rebates off profiles (Like T section to Z section) to form a weatherseal. Whereas in our Aluminium system each profile is system specific.

This is not to say that Bifold Doors made from PVCu will not perform to system specifications because they do. But it is hard to deny that Aluminium has many advantages.

Most but not all conservatories will sit quite happily on a simple concrete slab base that will serve both as a foundation and floor structure. If the ground is covered by a deep layer of topsoil it will be better to dig trench foundations down into the natural subsoil. Even with foundations under your walls you will still need to support the floor slab on a sound base and the construction of a conservatory is no different in this. Ground-bearing conservatory bases are usually in the region of 100mm thick and are cast over a level bed of hardcore. For the concrete base to function properly it must be carefully formed and there are several key elements to its design and construction.

The Victorian is the most popular style, as it is suitable for a wide range of house types. It can have three or five facets, giving a more rounded shape. The Edwardian style is flat fronted and allows excellent use of the available floor space, and gives maximum headroom.

The Lean-To is an uncluttered design for those who prefere the clean uncluttered style of a Mediterranean sun room. With a variable pitch roof, it is suitable for fitting under a low bungalow roof or against a higher sided building.

To self build a conservatory is relatively easy for someone with medium DIY experience. Complete plans and instructions are available - with back-up from skilled technicians, who you can talk to directly. You will save thousands of pounds compared to a fitted conservatory, even if you need to engage a local builder to assemble it for you. Site survey. Make your conservatory as big as your budget or actual floor space will allow. Consider drains. See if planning permission is required; contact your local council planning department before you start work. Base laying and preparation. Prepare the base to your requirements. Options such as floor insulation can be accommodated if required. Build the base up to the necessary height. Make sure your diagonal lengths are equal, so that your conservatory is truly square. Wall construction. This is normally matched as closely as possible to the house design ensuring that your self-build conservatory looks like an original feature. Cavity walls are standard. The frames will be in line with the inside edge on the exterior brick work, the internal brick work will be covered with windows sills (sold separately). Frame / roof erection. Get the frames fixed to your house wall, then the front. Make sure the frames are held securely whilst you fix them. Then build up you roof frame work. Completion. Glaze the roof, followed by the glass in the frames. Then clean your new self-build conservatory.

How do you choose the right design conservatory?  There are 3 main steps you will need to consider:

1.  The first thing is to choose the style of conservatory you want.  There is a wide range of style to suit all budgets.

2.  Next, consider what you want to use it for.  This will give you some idea of the options you may wish to include in your conservatory.

3.  Consider other areas which may impact upon the style of conservatory.

 

For example, assuming an edwardian style conservatory has been chosen for a property, what other factors should be considered?

If the conservatory is designed as an area for entertaining then a number of considerations could be taken?  How often is the conservatory likely to be used in the day?  How critical will noise levels be?  What extra heating and ventilation will be going into the conservatory?

With these factors in mind, a thermally efficient toughened glass, such as Conservaglass, may be chosen for a number of reasons: 1) it will retain heat in the cold winter months, 2) reduce heat in the warmer summer months and 3) will be quieter than polycarbonate when it rains.

 

Other areas that may impact upon the style of conservatory are whether planning permission is required.  A glass roof also may limit the overall possible size of the roof.

 

 

 

To build your own Prior diy flat pack conservatory is probably a lot easier than you think. With every conservatory we include simple step-by-step instructions and full base drawings.

 

If you look at most conservatory roof designs you might be forgiven for thinking that Victorian conservatories all had ornate ridges with elaborate finials at the apex of a low hexagonal-shaped end with all the windows having a line of fanlight vents beneath the eaves and with a transom beneath each one. In fact conservatories and conservatory roofs of this era looked nothing like this design; instead, larger roof-to-wall windows interspersed with a few fanlights were more common along with steeply pitched roofs with plain ridges.

Raising the conservatory roof pitch to 40 or even 50 degrees will make the glass roof dominant on the elevation sides but this in the main does not look out of place. If it does on your home and you still want to go for a steep roof it may be enough to locate the conservatory away from the principal entrance and front elevation. A more discreet site for it may have to be found, ideally a rear or side gable end if the position of the first floor windows will allow it. Even if the conservatory roof pitch differs, extending the home out from a gable wall with a scaled-down gable-ended addition always appears sympathetic.
