Conservatory Lighting

Naturally, you'll use your DIY conservatory during the day, but in the evening it's a wonderful place to relax - especially with the night sky above and the garden all around!

It's important to choose the right conservatory lighting, to create a unique intimate atmosphere and welcoming surroundings.

You can create a perfect balance using lights in the roof ridge, uplighters, downlighters, spots and table-lamps. Low-level lamps are best for creating an atmospheric environment and don't forget that natural light from an evening sky, the moon and stars, can be the best illumination of all - you might want to keep artificial lighting to the minimum to enjoy the beautiful scene through your conservatory roof.

You might also want to consider garden lighting to enhance your night time view from your conservatory so you can enjoy a truly magical conservatory experience.

FAQ

If you are considering purchasing an uPVC conservatory, it is always useful to know Something about the various options available today. Some FAQ's on conservatories together with our impartial answers.

Q. Will my uPVC Conservatory discolour in the sun?

A. Given that the uPVC used for your conservatory is of high-quality e.g. Rehau, Veka, Synseal, Spectus you should not come across any discolouration. Highly regarded uPVC conservatory companies will warrant against this occurrence.

Q. Some conservatory companies state that internal glazing is added security because there is no glazing bead on the outside of the frame. On the other hand, other conservatory companies state that exterior beading is more secure as the glass is secured by means of a double sided security tape which secures the glass to the inside frame Other conservatory companies declare that it is feasible to merely knock out internally fitted glazed units. Furthermore they are more prone to leaking given that during storm conditions; the flexing of the glass next to beading rather than the frame. What is the reality?

A. There are small rudiments of truth in both points. It is not easy to dispute against internal beading being the more secure than external beading and would favour this choice. However, it also correct that an externally beading maybe less prone to leaks. However, with today's design and manufacturing methods the profiles which make up your conservatory will have been tested and any defects corrected before manufacture and distribution. A lot of bias is put on the two methods by sales people who want you to purchase their products. The most important thing is to ensure that when purchasing your conservatory it carries a full 10 year guarantee on parts and labour.

Regarding the glass units being easy to knock out, this is not possible as the glass would shatter before it could be forced out of the glazing beads.

Q. I am thinking of having a conservatory with a glass roof but how will I clean it I am 65 but still nimble?

A. You have two options the first you purchase a telescopic handle with a large cleaning sponge and tackle the job from a ladder which we would not recommend you to do or purchase bio self cleaning glass with your conservatory. This is a fairly new product from the clever people at Pilkington glass. It uses daylight and rainwater to break down and wash away organic dirt from exterior surfaces, making it ideal for hard-to-reach surfaces that are difficult to clean like your conservatory roof.

Q. Please could you tell me how should I clean my uPVC conservatory and when?

A. The best way to clean you uPVC conservatory is to use a damp cloth (water and washing up liquid) wipe down all dirty surfaces as and when the conservatory looks a bit grubby. The uPVC should never be left to go green with algae as this can etch itself into the uPVC and mark it. Once a year clean the uPVC with a good quality uPVC cleaner, your conservatory will then always look like new.

Q. I have been told that wood grain uPVC conservatories fade in sun light is this true?

A. I have never heard of this happening. The process is quite sophisticated, the uPVC normally is standard white which is cleaned then it is wrapped in a foil which represents a wood grain of your choice, this should carry a full 10 year guarantee along with your conservatory.

Q. I have restricted finances but would like to have a small conservatory please could you advise me what route to take?

A. You don't state what your funds are, nevertheless, now's the moment to get some excellent bargains on uPVC conservatories. The cheapest way to have a conservatory is to buy a diy conservatory as long as you are a diy enthusiast or know a couple of acquaintances in the building industry you can save thousands of pounds.

Q. I wish to have a conservatory but there is a manhole which will be in the middle of the conservatory. Can this problem be over come?

A. That is not a problem if they can put a man on the moon you certainly have your conservatory over the manhole. Joking aside this situation is quite general today. To over come this problem and to comply with building regulation (good working practice) The old cover is removed and the existing inspection chamber is raised to the concrete level of the floor a double seal cover is than bedded into position and level with the new floor screed for a solid floor the centre of the cover is then filled with screed and levelled to the new floor. Should the floor be suspended (timber) the inspection cover normally finishes below the floor level and access is gained from a trap in the floor

Buying a conservatory

Planning permission needed for a conservatory:

In almost every case you will not need to worry about getting permission from your local authority before you install your baltic pine conservatory.

Under present legislation, you will NOT need to apply if:

1.) Detached and semi-detached houses
The conservatory does not increase the overall volume of the original house by whichever is the greater - 70 cubic metres or 15% of the volume up to a maximum of 115 cubic metres. (Scotland has its own regulations on this.)

1a.) Terraced or end-of-terraced houses
The conservatory does not increase the overall volume of the original house by whichever is the greater - 50 cubic metres or 10% of the volume up to a maximum of 115 cubic metres.

The wording 'original house' means the house as it was first built or as it stood on 1st July 1948 if it was built before then. If extensions have been built since, then those extensions count against the allowance.

2.) No part of the conservatory projects further forward than the existing front wall or higher than the highest point of your roof line.

3.) No part of your conservatory comes within 2 metres of your boundary if its more than 4 metres above the ground.

4.) It does not cover more than half of the original garden area.

Neither can it be used as a separate, independent dwelling.

Designers can always provide you with more detailed advice on any aspect of this and, should planning permission be required, guide you through the process. Permission would always be required if your house is a listed building or a conservation area. Should there be any doubts please contact your local planning authority.

Larger Self Build DIY conservatories.
For homes that require a larger conservatory, a P-shaped, T-shaped, Gable or Lantern style are very impressive additions. The P-shaped and T-shaped conservatories offer a large and versatile floor space. The Lantern style, dating back to the Orangeies of days gone by is destinguished by the two tiered feature roof and is a very popular choice for swimming pool enclosures. The Gable conservatory is similar to the Edwardian style, maximising floor space by way of a rectangular floor plan, but with the addad feature of an extended front elevation window. This further enhances the feeling of light and space.

Conservatory window and door specification

PVCu is the compound that fits in with people's busy lives today, and now, with the developments taking place over recent years, customers no longer have to compromise aesthetics for performance.

The PVCu profile used in our windows and doors has much softer lines and curves previously enjoyed by people with wooden windows. However, what only PVCu customers can appreciate is the low maintenance and high performance ratings achieved by PVCu.

Rehau, one of Europe's leading polymer producers, has been manufacturing profiles for PVCu windows for over 40 years. No other European window systems manufacturer has anything like the breadth of experience. Rehau's expertise in the field of window design and PVCu technology comes from manufacturing a vast range of polymer products, from car bumpers to artificial heart valves.

In addition to in-house tests, all Rehau systems are tested by independent bodies such as the British Standards Institute (BSI) and the British Board Of Agrément (BBA). Quality control is paramount with all factories operating to EN ISO 9001 (formerly BS 5750).

Conservatory Base Construction

Conservatory base construction. We have been asked many times how a conservatory base should be constructed. We have compiled a basic conservatory base construction guide which should cover the majority of cases and answer your questions.

The construction of a typical conservatory base is very similar to that of an extension to your house.

It is a general belief that; because a conservatory is lighter than an extension the foundation does not have to be very deep. This is not necessarily correct.

Firstly it is not possible to know precisely how deep the foundation will be until the ground is excavated and inspected for any 'made up areas' - this is where earth has been placed on existing ground.

Therefore it will be necessary to excavate a trench through this layer into load bearing ground. By doing this you will ensure that the conservatory has a good foundation base, as we expect that you do not want to wake up one morning to find your conservatory at the bottom of your garden!

Normally foundation trenches are between 650 - 1000mm deep.

The other factors which determine the foundation depth will be tree roots, drains and services.

Conservatory Base Works

Reduction of Ground Levels

The areas where your conservatory is to be built should have any hard materials removed, i.e. patio, concrete slab, etc. and any vegetation soil removed to an approximate depth of 150mm.

Excavation of Foundation Trench

Normally the foundation trenches are excavated to the following dimensions. (Ready to receive a mass concrete foundation) 450mm wide by 650/1000mm deep dependent upon ground conditions.

Existing Underground Drains

Where an existing drain punctures a foundation the foundation must be below the drain invert (bottom of drain) and a precast lintel placed above the drain so ensuring that no weight is put onto the drain.

Casting of Foundations

The foundation trench can now be concreted. A mass fill is normally used as this tends to be quicker and therefore cheaper. The concrete is normally finished 150mm below ground level.

It is always a good idea to knock 350mm x 10mm steel pins into the side of the trench at 600mm centers leveled with a spirit level so you will know when the concrete in the trench is at the correct height.

Substructure

From the foundation level build up the D.P.C. level in matching brickwork to the external face and common bricks or concrete blocks to the inside skin.

Oversite and Foundation Construction

100mm Concrete slab reinforced with a 142 steel mesh on 50mm sand blinding, on 250 micron damp proof membrane on 150mm (min) well consolidated clean hardcore.

Oversite Construction with a Suspended Floor

Should the ground where the conservatory is to be built drop away more than 600mm (2ft) a timer or concrete suspended floor may be more desirable and be more cost effective.

With a suspended floor air bricks must be built into the substructure to ensure subfloor ventilation is achieved.

Should the conservatory design be glass to floor the base would normally be left at this stage with a D.P.C. (damp proof course) bedded onto the external brickwork. Ready for the conservatory to be erected we would add that the brickwork and concrete are normally left to cure for approximately 5-10 days dependent upon weather conditions.

Dwarf Wall Option

From the D.P.C. level the brickwork can then be raised to the required height in cavity brickwork. Normally the cavity would be insulated with either expanded polystyrene of fiberglass to ensure a high degree of insulation to the conservatory. The 2 walls are held together with wall ties.

Specialist Foundations

In some conditions specialist foundations may be required e.g. brown filled sited (these are areas where old buildings have been demolished and a new development built, or areas where there are trees or very poor ground). All of these areas can be built upon but specialist foundations may be required such as a raft or piled foundations.

DIY Lean-To conservatories.

The lean-to style is for those who prefer the clean understated lines of a Mediterranean sunroom.Traditional or contemporary, this style is ideal for properties with limited space under the eaves or an awkward area in which to fit a conservatory.

The pitch of the roof is variable, so that a shallow pitch could fit  under a low bungalow roof, whilst a steeper pitch would match the roof of a terraced or detatched house.

Victorian

The Victorian is the most popular style of conservatory, with a versatility that makes it suitable for many houses and house styles. It's distinguishing architectural features, such as a bay front, give a curved appearance and a steeply pitched roof and ornate ridge details give this style of conservatory a more classical apprearance.

The Victorian style is available in:

Three facet - a bay front that has three main windows that give a curved appearance, widely angled for maximum space.

Five Facet - A bay front with five main windows creating a more rounded appearance.

Aluminium Bifolding Doors

Affordable folding sliding aluminium doors offer you the opportunity to open up your home or conservatory and bring your garden into your home.

Manufactured from slim aluminium profiles which provide strength and security our bifold doors allow you to fold and slide the panels back to left or right and open up an unobstructed wide opening to your patio or garden.

This superb range of folding sliding doors can be used as an external door to your garden or as an internal room divider such as from your lounge into your conservatory.

A Bifold door design to suit you

Our folding sliding aluminium doors are available in many different design configurations and doors are custom made specifically to suit your requirements so you can decide how your door is configured and whether it stacks inwards or outwards.

Also referred to as concertina doors, multifold doors and trifold doors their continued use in home improvement projects featured in magazines and television programs such as 'Property Ladder' mean that Bifolding doors are becoming a very popular alternative to French or patio doors. This is due to the much wider unobstructed opening possible and the low threshold options which make them ideal for use onto your patio or into your garden.

Folding sliding doors are now specified in many new home extensions as standard as homeowners realise the added value this type of door will bring not just to their lifestyle but also to make their property stand out from the crowd when it's time to sell.

Traffic Door Option

Many styles can be specified with a traffic door which provide a normal day to day door leaf allowing easy access to the garden without opening the whole bi-folding door up.

High Security Locking System

Our folding sliding doors are fitted with the latest high security locking. On styles supplied with a traffic door lever handles operate a high security hook-bolt locking system and a profile key cylinder allowing access from both inside and outside. Bifold doors supplied without a traffic door do not have external access and can only be opened from the inside by operating the shoot bolt locking system using the handles fitted to the meeting stiles of the door

Affordable Bi-fold doors feature:

  • Aluminium profiles for strength and rigidity
  • Polyamide thermal break for improved insulation
  • Slim sightlines when compared to similar PVCu bifold doors
  • Available in white or any RAL paint finish
  • Dual colour option
  • 28mm Tripleshield Argon Filled Low E double glazing
  • Low threshold option
  • High security locking as standard
  • Conforms to building regulations

Aluminium -v- uPVC Bifold Doors

Although upvc folding sliding doors are available the broader profiles mean narrower glass apertures and the weight and construction of the doors limit the width and heights that are available. Many upvc bifold doors are also restricted to inwards opening doors only.

Affordable bifolding doors are manufactured from Smart Systems Visofold aluminium folding door system which has a proven track record over many years throughout Europe. Available in panel configurations up to 6000mm wide, all of which are available as open out or open in bifold doors.

Optional Intergrated Blinds

For the ultimate folding door you can specify our intergrated venetian blind system. These unique blinds are actually encapsulated within the double glazed sealed units where they will remain clean and out of harm’s way for the life of the door. Available in a variety of slat colours these blinds provide privacy and shelter from direct sunlight and are a truly stunning addition to your new bifolding door.

Colour Options

Over 200 availablebi fold colours

If you are looking for something different, our folding sliding doors can be supplied in a range of RAL colours, in fact over 200 different colours are available and you can also specify one colour for the external surface and one colour for the internal surface.

Bifolding doors are ideal for swimming pool enclosures and conservatories to really bring the outside inside.

Affordable sliding folding doors are available fully installed from our national dealer network or supplied for DIY installation by you or your builder.

DIY Advantages

As a DIY project, you can be confident in the final result of your conservatory. You can take as much time as you want on the building, paying attention to those bits you feel are necessary. Should you hire a contractor, you may be more likely to rush any sticking points or issues in a quest to save money. Though it is unlikely that your final result will be customised to your tastes (with most conservatories being pre-manufactured), the project is ultimately up to you.

You will also have the pride of knowing that the conservatory was your effort and hard work. You will be familiar with every millimetre of your conservatory, and can be justifiably proud of it.

You can also be your own project manager; either taking a week of work to complete the conservatory, or doing it piecemeal during the weekend and in evenings.

If you wish to build a conservatory yourself, you can follow these steps, although it is important to note that these are fairly generic, and so may not apply to your exact conservatory design. In this case, the guide is based on a simple conservatory attached to some patio doors on a single wall of a house.

  1. Once you have marked out the area for your conservatory, you can begin to excavate the footing. You will need to dig to a depth of 450mm in order to provide sufficient stability and strength. You may need to dig deeper depending on the soil in your garden.
  2. If your excavation uncovers a utility pipe, you should add reinforcement around it, such as a concrete mesh foundation, or concrete lintels over the pipe.
  3. Concrete should now be poured into your footing trench; it should be at least 150mm thick. Ensure the concrete is free from air bubbles, and is smooth and level on top.
  4. Build the inner half of the cavity wall up to floor level, before laying hardcore to a minimum of 100mm deep, and compacting it.
  5. On top of this, sand should be laid to prevent any stones from tearing the waterproof membrane
  6. Lay a membrane (a sheet of plastic) over the sand, and lap it over the inner leaf of brickwork. On top of this, you may add floor insulation if you deem it necessary.
  7. Another layer of concrete should be added now; this one should be 100mm thick. This layer should be floated, so that it is suitable to lay tiles on. If you wish to carpet the floor, you should add a screeded floor finisher or a self-levelling compound.
  8. You can now build the exterior wall. Try to match the material to your home as best as possible. The inner wall should be built to the same level, using the same bricks as the exterior wall.
  9. The next step requires you to remove bricks from your house, in order to insert cavity trays, which will protect your conservatory and wall. While not essential, it is a worthwhile investment in the long term.
  10. With the cavity trays positioned, you will need to replace bricks in the wall, and re-point the joints between the bricks.
  11. You can now start building the PVCu conservatory. Start by fitting the sill to the dwarf wall.
  12. You can now start attaching the side frames to the sill. The eaves can now be applied; these will attach differently depending on the fitting system you use.
  13. Next, the polycarbonate glazing panels for the roof are inserted; though you may instead select double-glazing units.
  14. You may now add the glazing units to the side windows.
  15. You should now add any electrical cables for ceiling suspended light fittings or fans.
  16. After inserting electrical cables, you can now apply fascias to the eaves, to complete the appearance of the conservatory.

Under floor heating

The simplest and most convenient matting system. Flexi-mat
is similar to a fixed mat system but has the added advantage of being flexible and will stretch up to 50% in length for in-situ adjustments. With the heating cable secured to the mat in a uniform pattern, hot and cold spots are easily avoided and with the benefit of the extra stretch, makes this system the ideal kit for all room installations.
Simply roll out the flexi-mat to the required position on the prepared concrete or boarded floor, pin at one end with the fixing lugs, stretch to fit (if so required) and secure, cover in screed and finally lay the finished floor covering. Flexi-mats have a single cable power source, which connects to the programmer (via an RCD), simplifying the installation process and making this system the ideal choice for trade and DIY installers.

  • For installation under tiles and other suitable solid floor surfaces
  • Ideal for conservatories, house extensions, room conversions, bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Warm to touch for a comfortable room environment.
  • Variety of system kits available for all types of installation.
  • Mat or cable bonds with floor for lasting positioning.
  • No multiple wire connections - single 2 core 4 metre flying lead from mat system connects to programmer. Cable systems have a single core flying lead at each end.
  • Mat heating cables secured in a uniform pattern for time saving installations, eliminating hot and cold spots.
  • Flexi-mat systems give up to 50% extra stretch for installation adjustments.
  • Proven tough and flexible temperature probe monitors system and accurately relays floor temperature back to thermostat/controller.
  • Wide range of thermostatically controlled programmers from basic ON/OFF commands to timed, daily and weekly programme.
  • Flying leads on both mat or cable and temperature probe mean no installer connections are made under floor and connections are minimised.
